Disco Details

Weddings these days are a combination of tradition + the couple's own twist on things. As a wedding planner, I am often asked is to give advice on what to incorporate vs. leave out of a wedding. The number one thing I find myself repeating to couples over and over is this: “It is your day. Do what YOU want to do, even if that goes against tradition.” I am such a firm believer in this. You can still have every piece of a traditional wedding (or not), AND incorporate pieces to make sure the wedding reflects who you are as a couple.

Katie and Peter’s wedding perfectly exemplified just that: their wedding was full of meaningful, traditional moments, but all in all, the whole day was such a beautiful reflection of them because they chose to make it so. Yes, they had first dances and a cake cutting and a beautiful ceremony. But sprinkled in between all of the traditions were moments of originality.

Here is a list of unique moments that stood out to me as a wedding planner during K+P’s wedding:

  • The music that a bride chooses to walk down the aisle to can be so reflective of them. And Katie definitely made a statement with her song choice (if you haven’t heard "Your Soul," by Forest, listen to it now, and imagine a beautiful bride walking down the aisle on a summer afternoon with the three Sisters mountains in the background…. ICONIC).

  • Katie and Peter’s vows were personal and heartfelt, and they were followed by a unity ritual, aka, shots of Screwball.

  • K+P changed into brand new matching black and white converse after the ceremony.

  • The lodge in which they got married was decked out in disco balls of varying sizes (seriously, there had to have been a few hundred). The combination of the elegant wood lodge with the disco balls was truly breathtaking and SO unique. Elegant disco is the best way I can describe it!

  • Katie came out halfway through the night in the BEST outfit change. She wore her white converse, white slacks, and a top that looked like a disco ball. This outfit still made her shine (literally), but was also so comfy.

  • And comfortability was key, because quickly after the outfit change came the pinata.

  • As a graphic designer, Katie took the time to design so many cute little signs, as well as the website, that really tied the whole wedding together. Each sign had the same font and color scheme. The welcome sign, desert labels, table numbers, and so on were so well done.

  • A conga line around the entire lodge with every single guest.

  • Peter did a keg stand on the patio. Enough said.

I want to go back to this day. The lodge, the disco balls, the music, the sunshine, the delicious food, the vendors, the wedding guests, the incredible couple… I had so much fun being a part of Katie and Peter’s day. Honored to call them both my friends and teammates!

I want to give a special shout-out to this vendor team. Bella (photographer - Bella Boyd Photography), Emily (videographer - Emily Irene Photo Co.), and Kelly (event coordinator - Aspen Lakes Lodge), you all are a wedding planner's dream. So on top of it, organized, kind, and fun to work with. I cannot wait to continue to work with you in the Oregon wedding industry!
